Competitive analytics and business intelligence techniques have become more mainstream, and corporations are searching for specialists who have solid analytical skills. Sports teams like the Boston Red Sox and the New England Patriots have successfully applied analytics both to help them decide which players to acquire as well as what to do in actual play. Congratulations to Dr. Shane Reese on receiving the 2007 H. O. Hartley Award from the Department of Statistics at Texas A&M University for distinguished service to the discipline of Statistics. The award is in honor of Professor H. O. Hartley who founded the Institute of Statistics in 1962. Hartley was a pioneer and leader in the development of the theory and real world applications of statistics. He was also an avid proponent of good statistical practices who, through his teaching, lectures and national/international service, significantly advanced the understanding and use of statistics across myriad other disciplines.
