Department of Statistics Summer Internship Grants
Spring/Summer 2026
The Department of Statistics is committed to helping our students build real-world experience. We recognize that some data and statistics opportunities — at nonprofits, government agencies, research labs, and mission-driven companies — may be unpaid.
The Statistics Summer Internship Grants exist to change that. By funding a portion of your time this summer, we help you say yes to an unpaid experience that could shape your career — whether you are a Statistics, Actuarial Science, or Data Science major.
Eligibility
To apply, you must:
- Be a declared undergraduate major in Statistics, Actuarial Science, or Data Science in the BYU Department of Statistics
- Have already secured an unpaid internship or applied statistics experience
Eligible host organizations include:
- Nonprofit organizations
- Local or state government agencies
- Research laboratories or universities
- For-profit companies
The internship must involve meaningful application of statistics (data analysis, statistical modeling, research design, data visualization, survey methodology, actuarial analysis, or similar work).
How to Apply
Submit your completed application, AIM student record summary, and resumé as attachments in an email to StatsInternshipGrants@byu.edu. Applications received by April 25, 2026, will be reviewed in the first round, with decisions communicated by May 1. Applications submitted after April 25 will be reviewed on a rolling basis while funds remain — apply as soon as your internship is confirmed.
A confirmation email from your internship supervisor will be requested after award decisions are made, but it does not need to accompany your initial application.
Timeline
| Date | Milestone |
| Now | Secure your internship placement |
| April 25, 2026 | First-round application deadline |
| May 1, 2026 | First-round decisions communicated |
| After May 1 | Rolling review of remaining applications while funds last |

| September 5, 2026 | ELMS review completed |
Disbursement
Grant funds will be disbursed to your BYU account following a mid-summer check-in. Around the midpoint of your internship, you will submit a short progress report — including hours worked to date and a reflection on how the experience is going — along with a confirmation email from your supervisor. Funds will be released after that check-in is received and approved.
If your situation requires a different disbursement schedule — for example, if you need funds in advance to cover travel to your internship location — please note this in your application or reach out to us at StatsInternshipGrants@byu.edu. We are happy to work with you on a schedule that fits your circumstances.
After the Internship
Grant recipients are required to complete the BYU Experiential Learning Program Evaluation through ELMS by September 5. To submit your evaluation:
- Go to https://byu-csm.symplicity.com/ and select Students
- Sign in using Current Students: Single Sign On with your BYU credentials
- Click the Experiential Learning tab
- Locate your experience and click Program Evaluation (pencil icon)
The evaluation takes about ten minutes. Your responses will be returned to the department without your name attached, and will be used to improve the program for future students. Completion of this evaluation is a condition of the grant.
Grant recipients are also invited to submit a photo to the Inspired Images Internship photo contest.
