Rebecca Nichols – a BYU Statistics alumna and former visiting professor – jointly with her husband, Luke, made a generous donation to the BYU Department of Statistics, establishing the “Joseph L. and Shelley M. Reimann Endowed Fund,” named in honor of Rebecca’s parents. Her motivation for giving was inspired by her gratitude for the education she received, the experiences that shaped her professional and personal life, and the scholarships that allowed her to graduate from both the BS and MS programs debt-free.
Rebecca speaks with the highest regard about her time in the department—from working on real-world problems through research, to serving as a TA, and later joining the faculty as a visiting professor. She feels these opportunities strengthened her understanding of statistical concepts, provided valuable paid work experience, and helped her create the life she and her family enjoy today. Because of these opportunities, she is nearing 20 years working for the American Statistical Association (ASA) in their education outreach program.
Reflecting on her time at BYU, she noted the importance of the department’s financial support—whether through TA positions, research assistant opportunities, consulting center work, or scholarships from both the university and the department. These resources not only helped her but also supported much of her cohort. Graduating without student debt enabled her to help pay for her husband’s law degree, which in turn allowed him to start a successful practice and business with minimal debt. Now, they are in a position to give back.
Rebecca says she was inspired to donate because the contributions of others gave her those same opportunities. She also wanted to honor her parents, who helped her attend school and have served so many people throughout their lives.
If she could share one message with current students, it would be: “We are all very fortunate to be associated with the Department of Statistics at BYU. It is a wonderful place with wonderful opportunities… we have all been very blessed.” She encourages students to remember that – when they are able – give back so others can have the same opportunities.
