2025 BYU Stats Summer Selfie Photo Contest

Show us where statistics is taking you this summer!

If you’re a BYU statistics major with a summer internship, research assistantship, or other data-driven adventure—whether in Provo or across the globe—we want to see (and share) your story. Selected entries will be featured in a gallery on the first floor of the West View Building, giving future students a window into the exciting opportunities Cougars are finding.

HOW TO ENTER — 3 SIMPLE STEPS

  1. Capture 2 photos

    A View From Where You Are–Snap a photo of the place you’re spending your summer. This could be a city skyline, a quaint café nearby, or the serene nature around you—anything that captures the essence of your location. Selfie at Your Workstation–Take a selfie at your summer workstation. Whether it’s a traditional office, a co-working space, or a make-shift desk at home, we want to see where the magic happens!

    • Submissions must be at least 4 MB, but 5 MB or larger are encouraged. Please submit jpeg or tiff files. The view-from-where-you-are photo needs to have sufficient resolution so it may be enlarged to 2’x3’ (but the selfie will only be printed in a small-format).
    • Basic edits only (crop, exposure, color). Black and white photos may be submitted.
    • Please follow BYU Honor Code and best safety practices.

  2. Caption

    Write a couple of sentences about your summer experience: Tell us what problem you’re tackling, which stats/data-science skills you’re using, or a fun fact about your summer experience. Include city and country (or U.S. city and state) as well as company name.

  3. Submit by 9:00 p.m. MDT, Friday, 1 August 2025

    Email your two photos and caption to StatsSelfies@stat.byu.edu with the subject “BYU Stats Selfie Submission.” File names: Last_First_view.jpg and Last_First_selfie.jpg One entry per student.

AWARDS & PERKS

  • 1st Place – $300 award
  • 2nd Place – $200 award
  • 3rd Place – $100 award
  • All eligible participants – $15 Cougar Cash
  • Hallway Gallery – Winning and honorable-mention photos will be professionally printed & mounted for a colorful Fall 2025 exhibit in the first-floor corridor of the West View Building—transforming a blank wall into an inspiring mosaic of student adventures.

Winners will be notified in early September. Judges are BYU statistics faculty & staff. The department reserves the right to refuse any entry not meeting guidelines.

FINE PRINT

  • Entrants must be currently enrolled full-time BYU statistics/data science students.
  • Photos must be taken between 1 May and 1 August 2025.
  • By submitting, you grant the BYU Department of Statistics non-exclusive rights to display and use your images (with credit) in print, online, and social media.
  • One prize per student.
  • Submission implies acceptance of all rules above.
