2020-2021 Student Employee of the Year Award

Congratulations to Sarah Cannon and Garrett Duncan for being awarded the Department of Statistics Student Employee of the Year Award. Both students have gone above and beyond this year and truly deserve this recognition.

Sarah Cannon
Sarah was hired on as a Student Secretary a few weeks before everything went remote due to Covid-19. Even though she barely had time to be fully trained, she jumped in right away and enthusiastically tackled any project given to her and then reached out to see if anyone else needed help. She is eager to learn and help others. She took control of our Instagram page and has been great in running it ever since. She was particularly proactive and creative in creating content for our Instagram this summer when so many needed a way to feel connected with others. Congratulations and thank you!

Garrett Duncan
Garrett was hired in the summer of 2020 when it became apparent that the University would be needing assistance in monitoring and modeling the spread of COVID-19 and that Dr. Christensen's team from the Department of Statistics would be tasked to help provide insights to the BYU President’s Council and the Director of Risk Management. Garrett was hired to be the point person for data management and data science on the team. One of Garrett’s talents is taking large problems and discretizing them into manageable segments. He then finds ways to weave the segments into coherent algorithms that can be replicated weekly to integrate the new solutions into the weekly workflow. Garrett is tenacious in finding solutions, beating on difficult problems until they can be reformulated into solvable forms. All of the dedication and hard work he has done has been critical to keeping BYU safe during the pandemic. Congratulations and thank you!
