The Mitchell Prize

The Mitchell Prize is awarded in recognition of an outstanding paper that describes how a Bayesian analysis has solved an important applied problem. The Prize is jointly sponsored by the Section on Bayesian Statistical Science (SBSS) of the ASA, the International Society for Bayesian Analysis (ISBA), and the Mitchell Prize Founders’ Committee. The fund was initiated by donations from Toby’s many friends and colleagues at the Oak Ridge National Laboratories, Duke University, Peter Rossi, Jerome Sacks, Microsoft Research, the Section on Bayesian Statistical Science of the ASA, University of California at Los Angeles and Donald Ylvisaker. 2020 Melvin W. Carter Professorship

The Melvin W. Carter Professorship is an award to a faculty member for their exemplary research, teaching, mentorship, and citizenship in statistics. We recognize Dr. William F. Christensen for his nearly 20-year BYU career with the 2020 Melvin W. Carter Professorship. Dr. Christensen is a Fellow of the American Statistical Association and has received the Karl G. Maeser Excellence in Teaching award. He is a successful collaborator and mentor with expertise in spatial and environmental statistics. The professorship provides $10,000 annually for five years. He will have the opportunity to present at least one seminar a year to the faculty and students. Read Full Story

The 2020 Young Scholar Faculty Fellowship

The 2020 Young Scholar Faculty Fellowship is awarded to Dr. White. In his first year at BYU Dr. White had two Environmetrics papers, an American Statistician paper, and a JRSS-A paper accepted. He was also recognized with the 2019 Wiley-TIES Best Environmetrics Paper Award ("A model for Antarctic surface mass balance and ice core site selection," with C. Shane Reese, William F. Christensen, Summer Rupper). The Young Scholar Faculty Fellowship provides a $3,000 annual salary stipend for two years. Read Full Story

2020 Faculty Fellowship in Data Science

This has been awarded to Dr. Heaton. His proposal is to offer an experiential learning class for students to participate in Kaggle competitions. The class will enhance student portfolios and will be available to dept majors who have completed Stat 330 and will also include interested Master’s students. The Data Science Faculty Fellowship provides a $4,000 annual salary stipend for two years, the Kaggle class will be part of his regular faculty teaching assignment, student wages will be budgeted for the student mentors, and student travel will be budgeted for top students to attend a professional conference and short course. Dr. Howard Nielsen

We are sad to hear about the passing of Dr. Howard Nielsen. The genesis of the BYU Statistics Department was when BYU President Ernest Wilkinson hired Dr. Nielsen, who was a Stanford professor, to forecast the growth of The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints, and after finding out Howard was a Latter-day Saint invited him to join the faculty.
